American Adventure Gets the “Relevant” Treatment: Founding Fathers Out, Talking Toys In

ORLANDO, FL — In a bold move to finally make American history accessible to the average theme park guest, Disney officials will announce at D23 that the American Adventure pavilion in EPCOT will undergo a major “refresh.” The new version of the classic Audio-Animatronics show will tell the story of the United States exclusively through the lens of Woody and Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story.

“History is just toys with better PR,” one Imagineering executive will say during the presentation. “The story of America has always been about plastic, collective imagination, and the occasional existential crisis about whether you’re a real boy or just a collectible. Woody and Buzz get that. Mark Twain and Benjamin Franklin? Modern guests don’t even know who those guys are. But Buzz and Woody? They’re their best friends. They’ve seen the movies seventeen times. They sleep with the plushies. This is how you connect.”

The updated show will feature an all-new script in which the founding of the nation is framed as a backyard playdate that got way out of hand. The Revolutionary War becomes a dramatic standoff over who gets to be the “favorite toy.” The Civil War is reimagined as a bitter custody dispute between the attic and the moving boxes. The space race is, of course, narrated by Buzz with extensive laser pointer effects.

Park officials gushed about the creative vision.

“For too long we’ve forced people to sit through talking statues of people who never once said ‘To infinity and beyond,’” says an EPCOT creative director speaking under anonymity. “Guests today don’t need to know about the Federalist Papers. They need to know that Woody once faced the existential horror of being replaced by a newer model. That’s the American experience.”

The surrounding area is getting the full treatment as well. The Regal Eagle Smokehouse will be rebranded as Woody’s Smokehouse, serving “There’s a Snake in My Boot” pulled pork and “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” brisket. One of the nearby drink kiosks will become “Get Buzz’d,” offering glowing green cocktails that claim to temporarily raise your courage level and lower your awareness of historical accuracy.

Not everyone was thrilled upon hearing the rumor. Longtime EPCOT traditionalist and self-described “pavilion purist” Karen M. of Tampa was not impressed. “I used to bring my kids here so they could learn something. Now they’re going to leave thinking the Louisiana Purchase was just Andy’s mom buying a bigger toy chest. This is how civilizations fall. Next they’ll replace the Hall of Presidents with the Hall of Sidekicks.”

Disney insists the changes are purely about relevance. “If the Founding Fathers were alive today,” one official noted, “they’d probably be writing angry tweets about the lack of merchandising opportunities. We’re just meeting the moment.”

The new American Adventure is expected to open in time for the country’s next birthday, which likely won’t even be mentioned in the show, ensuring an entire generation grows up believing the Declaration of Independence was signed in a cardboard box fort.
